Tom Valente Ph.D.I conduct research on substance abuse prevention, treatment programs, and on the evaluation of health promotion programs. My two main research interests are network analysis and the study of social influence through social networks and program evaluation.  I received a B.S. in mathematics from Mary Washington College, an M.S. in mass communication from San Diego State University, and a Ph.D. from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California.  I spent nine years at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health from 1991 to 2000 conducting research and teaching health communication, program evaluation, and network analysis.

Network Models of the Duffusion of Innovations


Network analysis is a set of techniques used to study who is connected to whom in a community.  It is often used to measure the communication structure for individuals, groups, organizations and communities.  My particular interest is in how networks can be used to study health behavior.  I wrote a book, Network Models of the Diffusion of Innovations that describes how networks structure the flow of information and adoption behavior

Below find video files (in flash format) of the 1-minute commercials produced and disseminated as part of the Bolivia National Reproductive Health Program (NRHP) Mass Media Campaign. The program was created and produced by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP; visit funding from the US Agency for International Development. Evaluation of the program was documented by Valente in one preliminary findings report (Valente & Saba, 1996) and two published papers (Valente and Saba, 1998; 2001) and reported extensively in Valente (2002: Evaluating Health Promotion Programs Oxford University Press).
