Dental X-Rays Can Be a Lifesaver
A recent study of more than 1,000 men and women shows that certain dental x-rays specially panoramic x-rays can help identify people who may be at higher risk fore stroke. Calcifications in the carotid arteries, which show up in the panoramic x-rays, may indicate that there are plaque deposits in the arteries a leading cause of strokes.
The study, the first to use both men and women and those not previously considered at risk, also found a correlation between carotid calcifications and obesity.
Conducted at the University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, the research concluded that dental x-ray may be used as a diagnostic tool to help identify asymptomatic patients and give them an immediate referral to a physician to advise a stroke-prevention strategy.
